Well, it happened! « Thread Started on Nov 1, 2009, 12:35pm »
I found someone! Someone who is laid back and funny, easy to get along with. Loves going outside, takes everything in stride.
Oh yeah, he's a horse. And oh yeah, there's a story behind it. (isn't there always?)
I wanted Gracie. Wanted wanted wanted. I was holding off on calling the woman (I refuse to call her a lady) and telling her that I wanted her simply because, based on past dealings, I knew she would not hold Gracie until the estate checks came. She'd either be sold right out from under me or else her price would skyrocket. She's been sitting in a pasture for 9 months with only three people having been on her... what's the harm? Another few days was nothing.
Last Sunday, my old teacher called me early in the morning. "She sold Gracie this morning." Huh? I begged her to be kidding (I'd hate her for a while, but hey, I'd forgive her. It was better than her being serious, right?) No dice. She was serious.
To put it lightly, I was crushed. All day I just sat around in a fog of depression. Come evening, I went on Craigslist just to cruise, see what was out there in my possible price range. I found a draft cross gelding who looked mildly interesting, so I sent an email to see if he was still available. The woman got back to me in a matter of an hour and we set up a time to call and chat.
The estate checks came on Monday. I had literally missed getting Gracie by hours.
He's a ten year old Vanner cross, been used for lessons and therapeutic riding. She got him after she took a bad fall and needed someone to build her confidence. Now that she was back to her old self, she was looking for someone to compete with, and he's just too laid back for what she wanted to do. Up to date on everything, very sweet, all that jive. So I decided to take a 2-hour drive to see him. Nothing better to do, right?
Got there a hair early, and could see right into the barn when I pulled up. There's this big paint in the aisleway, with three people attending him. He'd rolled in the mud - there was one person hosing the mud off of his legs, another person currying, and the third was going to town with the Vac-n-Blow to get the dirt off. And he was just standing there with this blissful look on his face like "Ooo, they're fussing over me!"
I got out of my car and went inside, his owner came up. "I'm so sorry! He's filthy!" No problem. He's a horse, a mostly white one at that. They roll. I wasn't worried about it. If dirt skeezed me out, I certainly wouldn't be in the horse world.
I gave him a quick look over, no visual issues. When he realized I had treats, he was all about me (though not rude or grabby). She showed me her records of his vaccinations and worming, the farrier visits. We saddled him up and took him into the indoor. Soft on the mouth, easy to drive, not a care in the world. When they were putting the cavalettis up against the wall, he just put his head up and watched, attentive but unconcerned. I got off, she got on and took him for a few spins, up and over a few crossrails. We put him in his stall so we could chat for a while. What she was looking for in an owner, what I wanted. While we were sitting there, someone else called to ask about him and she politely said that they were at the end of the line and she'd call them back later. But, that wasn't to be. Because by the end of the night, she had a check in her hands and a promise that I'd let her know as soon as possible about when we'd pick him up.
So now... just a waiting game to see when he comes home! And now down to the last few days of the trial to see if Killian fits in well where he is to see if he has a new home himself. Be the perfect resolution.
